Special Features

Jump Start basketball camp offers several special camp features for campers on a daily basis. These special features are unique to Jump Start. We offer these sessions in addition to the basic camp sessions such as stations, lectures, practices, games, and contests. These extra sessions are offered to help campers individually improve every aspect of their game – from the physical to the mental.

Daily Ball Handling Series
We start every camp day with a series of ball handling drills. All campers participate using their own basketball. We teach the basic fundamentals of ball control and dribbling techniques. As the week progresses the series of drills focuses on change of direction techniques that all players should develop. Each camper – regardless of size and/or position – should benefit from these daily sessions.

Early Bird
Each morning at Jump Start we offer each camper the valuable option of “individual instruction.” Between 7 am and 8 am every morning campers may choose to work on any part of their game with any coach or counselor at camp. Our staff is available in the gym at this hour to assist any camper willing to put in the extra time. Players completely determine which part of their game they want to focus on during these sessions. Some campers choose to work on their shooting technique while others choose to improve their defensive or rebounding skills. We have found these sessions to be very popular and helpful to our campers.

Night Owl
Each evening at Jump Start we offer an additional hour of individual instruction to all campers. Similar to our “early bird” sessions, these “night owl” sessions are completely optional. Typically camp will end at approximately 9 pm. From 9 pm until 10 pm campers may ask any coach or counselor on staff to assist them on an individual basis. Our staff is available at this time to help any camper who wants to improve any aspect of their game. This is one of most popular programs at Jump Start.

Post/Guard Skills
Every day we spend time teaching certain aspects of the game to post players and guards. Players may determine which area they would like to focus on for that day. Players may attend Guard camp one day and Post camp the next day. Guards are taught specific guard related skills such as three point shooting, perimeter penetration, passing in to the post, etc. Post players focus on their own skills such as positioning, drop step moves, up and under moves, post defense, etc.

Fast Break Games
We have developed a game where the focus is on teaching the campers how to successfully run a 3 on 2 fast break. We teach the campers the basic concept of how to attack the basket in transition by playing an entire game (two 16 minute halves) where the offense is always on a 3 on 2 fast break and the third defender is trailing the play. Campers learn the mentality of attacking the basket, passing the ball and getting a good shot. Also, campers learn how to defensively handle a fast break situation. Each team will participate in these games at least once a day.

Situational Games
This is one of the most unique features of Jump Start. Each night teams and coaches will be required to participate in different scenarios involving end of the game situations. For example, a team will be told they are down one point with the ball at half court with 20 seconds on the game clock. The coach will design a play and the players will try to execute the play to win the game. Defensive strategy is also involved in these games. Players and coaches get an opportunity to learn how to handle end of the game situations on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. We feel that this is a tremendous teaching tool for all levels of players. Players must learn to listen and execute in many different ways in order to be successful. We have found that campers and coaches really enjoy this opportunity to experience and learn how they could better handle end of the game situations.
